A little introduction...

Hello my lovelies, and welcome to my first ever blog post!

My main reason for wanting to start this blog is that in the autumn of 2015, I was diagnosed with vaginismus. Vaginismus, for those who have never heard of it (and I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't) is an involuntary contraction of the vaginal muscles which makes penetrative sex extremely painful or in some cases completely impossible.

For me, it's an impossibility currently. I have never been able to put so much as a tampon inside me. After a very bad first sexual experience when I was 13, I have never been able to achieve that level of physical intimacy with a partner.

Unfortunately female sexual dysfunction has never really been given a voice. As one friend who is also in recovery told me recently " we are still in a time where it is perfectly acceptable to advertise Viagra at the superbowl...but no one has ever heard of vaginismus." However, I believe times are changing. Slowly but surely, more and more is being researched and the network of support is becoming stronger and more positive.

I would very much like my blog to be part of that network. I want to start an open and honest conversation about this condition and the recovery process, as well as sharing my own journey and things that have helped me personally.

It has taken me about a year to fully accept self love and body positivity into my life, and I find these practices have been hugely beneficial in terms of my recovery. I have gone from a girl who once wept every time she saw herself naked in the mirror and counted herself lucky that any man would "put up with her," to being a woman who treats her body gently and with the respect it is owed and who is learning more about her worth with each passing day.

I am currently undergoing a physical treatment program using dilators, as well as psychosexual therapy. So I will keep you posted on progress, dating whilst having vaginismus and self love practices!

That's all for now, but I will leave you with a little piece of self love advice which blew my mind when I started putting it into practice....

If you wouldn't say it to your best friend, stop saying it to yourself!

Bye for now! x
